Tysabri Recommended for Relapsing MS in UK
The UK’s National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) recommended Biogen Idec/Elan’s Tysabri for the treatment of highly active relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS), the companies announced.
“Tysabri [natalizumab] is the first treatment for multiple sclerosis to be recommended for use by NICE,” the companies said.
Currently, the use of beta interferons, such as Bayer HealthCare’s Betaseron, Biogen’s Avenox and Teva Pharmaceuticals’ Copaxone (glatiramer acetate), are… read more »
Which T cell types drive the autoimmune response in multiple sclerosis?
In multiple sclerosis (MS), the myelin that surrounds the axons of
nerve cells is attacked by the body’s own T cells, resulting in
slowed and disrupted nerve impulses and, ultimately, axon loss.
Myelin basic protein (MBP) is a major component of the myelin sheath
and when used as an antigen will induce experimental autoimmune
encephalitis (EAE) in mice, which is used as an animal model… read more »

What is Multiple Sclerosis?
Crucial Role In Multiple Sclerosis Discovered
Researchers have discovered that calcium ions could play a crucial role in multiple sclerosis by activating enzymes that degrade the fatty sheath that insulates nerve fibers.
Learning exactly how the myelin sheath is degraded might enable scientists to determine how to halt disease progress and reverse damage by growing new myelin, said Ji-Xin Cheng, an assistant professor in Purdue… read more »
Antibody Linked to MS Significantly Higher in Spinal Fluid of Blacks
Description
An antibody frequently used as a diagnostic marker for multiple
sclerosis (MS) is present at greater levels in the cerebrospinal
fluid of blacks with MS than Caucasians with the disease.
